Tenna Torres is one of Mariah Carey’s favorites on American Idol because she is an alumnus of Camp Mariah. The 28-year-old knows that it is her last chance to chase her American Idol dream and came out with gloves on fighting.
Tonight Tenna performed a beautiful, slowed-down rendition of Natasha Bedingfield’s “Soulmate.” In a way she put her own twist on the song and was able to deliver an emotionally-charged performance. It also allowed her to show the judges that she has a big control that she knows how to control and use. In all honesty, I was a bit bored at the end of the song, but Tenna has incredible potential for growth if given a chance.
The judges loved the performance.
- Keith Urban: That was a beautiful song for you to do. It’s deceptively big song. Requires a lot of control which I think you mostly had. I particularly liked the end. It was a good controlled moment for you.
- Nicki Minaj: You reminded me of why I fell in love with your voice before.. You have control over the song and you chose a great song.. Your tone reminded me of 1980s R&B singers. There’s no tone like that right now.
- Randy Jackson: To me guys, this is the start of the night. This is how you do it! You came out. It was controlled, it was 95 percent perfect. The thing I loved was you were connecting with the emotion of the song. This is what becoming the next American Idol is about.
- Mariah Carey: You know I love you. I don’t want to be redundant. Everyone’s said how I feel. I just want to say this was all you. You gave every bit of your emotions. I understand what you meant when you said it was a sad song.
Tonight five ladies had to go home in the sudden death, but luckily for Tenna she was not one of them.
Randy Jackson: Hello Tenna. This is a nerve-racking night for all of us. Five people have to go home, five people have to stay. You came along way this season. Listen, I mean it’s a tough thing but you’re gonna stay with us.. Congratulations.
