Mariah's back in the game | Stuff@school Online

Review by ANN-MARIE KHOR

An American Idol judge shows the contestants how it’s done, hitting a home run with her latest single, Almost Home.

Mariah Carey is back with one of the most listenable tracks of the year thus far; a frothy, fun, radio-friendly pop confection that is sweet, without being too overbearing.

Released in February 2013, Almost Home is an uplifting anthem off the soundtrack of Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful, a prequel of The Wizard of Oz. The song will sound right at home on radio, as it fits the Disney image perfectly, while allowing Carey to stay true to her sound.

Stargate (Diamonds, Let Me Love You, Irreplaceable), a Norwegian production team, gave Almost Home a hypnotic beat as well as a clean and crisp foundation which allowed Carey’s stellar vocals to shine.

While Almost Home starts off almost unassuming and relatively tame for the 43-year-old songstress, it builds up to a simple and incredibly infectious chorus. A key change in the bridge then leaves room for Carey’s vocals to soar, allowing her to demonstrate her unrivaled vocal acrobatics until she reaches a glass-shattering climax.

One of the best things about this song is that Carey doesn’t attempt to over sing this song, save for her signature vocal riffs at the end. Her voice sounds reassuring, which fits the overall emotion of the lyrics.

Although the song is a mass-produced Disney single, Carey’s undeniable talent is still palpable throughout the song. While this song generally glides along on a thumping, midtempo groove, the chorus is incredible, and the runs at the end of the song are nothing short of exhilarating.

Showcasing her vocals that are still as good and powerful as ever, Mariah Carey reminds us of the fact that she has the most number one hit singles in United States history (even ousting Elvis Presley along the way!).

Almost Home is a beautiful, sweeping pop ballad that delivers, and is most definitely a worthy comeback song for the multiple-octave diva.
