Janelle Arthur – FOX
Janelle Arthur couldn’t hang on any longer. The 23-year-old Tennessee native was the first female finalist to exit the competition on American Idol season 12.
Janelle, who was a part of the first-ever all-female top 5, was sent packing after receiving mixed feedback from the judges on her two performances on Wednesday night.
She took on Vince Gill‘s “When I Call Your Name” for her first performance. It was hailed as “raw and real” by Mariah Carey, while Keith Urban said he “didn’t feel it.” For her second performance, she went upbeat with Dolly Parton‘s “Dumb Blonde.” “This was a fun song for you…vocally it didn’t show anything different,” Randy Jackson said after the performance. “I don’t feel like that was the best song for you to shine,” Keith offered. Nicki Minaj predicted Janelle would be in trouble because there were more “dynamic” girls in the competition, but told her to be proud of how far she’s come.
In her effort to secure the judges’ sole save of the season, Janelle performed The Supremes‘ “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” but the judges decided to hang on to the save and send Janelle home.
Four contestants remain. They are: Candice Glover, Kree Harrison, Angie Miller, and Amber Holcomb.
