Would You Spend Shabbos with Paula Abdul? ? Jewish Business ...

Paula Abdul

Former American Idol judge, singer Paula Abdul wants you to come for Shabbos, the Jewish Week reports.

“The Shabbos Project is a unique, international grassroots Jewish identity movement that unites all Jews to keep one full Shabbat together,” says the About section of their website. “The idea originated last year in South Africa, where the majority of the country’s diverse Jewish community joined together to observe a single Shabbat, most for the first time in their lives.”

Abdul, a Syrian Jew, agreed to be a part of the Shabbos Project, uniting Jews on the day of rest October 24-25. In a recent video, she expressed her love for Shabbos.

“Shabbos is very important to me because it’s my time to be just me—no paparazzi, no invasion of my privacy,” Abdul says. “I can always look forward to the end of the week and say, ‘Thank God I have Shabbos.’”

Abdul says she heard about the project from the chief rabbi of South Africa, Rabbi Warren Goldstein, who called to ask her to participate. “When the chief rabbi calls, like you’re going to turn it down?” she says in the video.

Other celebrities in the project include actress Maureen Lipman, radio presenter Vanessa Feltz and singer-songwriter Alex Clare.
