Football megastar Wayne Rooney has got in touch with a contestant on American Idol to offer the youngster the chance to come and see him play.
Roo was so moved when he saw 16-year-old cystic fibrosis sufferer Kayden Stephenson’s appearance on the US reality TV show that he decided to drop him a line on Twitter.
He offered to fly Kayden and his family over from Oklahoma and put them up in a hotel so that they could watch him play in Manchester United’s big Champions League tie against Real Madrid at Old Trafford on 5 March.
Wayne, 27, wrote to Kayden: “Your story inspires me, reminds me of a friend I know.
“Thank you for being brave and sharing your story. No matter what happens on Idol, music inspires people and you inspire people.
“Keep doing it, you will help a lot of people.”
The footballer lost his childhood friend Stephen Johnson to CF last year.
Kayden replied: “OMG! Dude. I can’t believe you tweeted me. I’m glad I inspired you. I’m a soccer player and you inspire me.”
And he later added: “I just freaking talked to Rooney. Wow. He had a friend who had cystic fibrosis. That’s why he reached out to me.”
