Remember when I said I wasn’t sure how I would cover American Idol this year? Yeah, one thing I’m sure of is that it will be generally after the fact. And more abbreviated than in the past. That said, here’s the first real coverage. My real-time thoughts as I watched Wednesday’s show today. I’ll try to make it so that I’m closer to the actual airing of the show in the future – especially when it’s open voting, but we shall see. Off we go…
Jenny Beth sang some country song and sounded like some country girl with a big last note. Judges were mixed, but mostly unimpressed. Mariah talks too much.
Teena is 28, but looks 48. She picks a slow song to highlight her inner diva. I think it backfired. No energy, lots of pitchiness. Judges were impressed, âœcontrolâ is the word of the minute.
Adriana from Alaska opts for the sultry sound with a lounge song. She shows control, poise, and a great range. Best of the three. Judges loved it.
Brandy looks like a bad newscaster. I take it sheâ™s a country singer. I say sheâ™s an easy cut. Judges feel she didnâ™t connect to the song. Except Mariah, who wasnâ™t connected enough to notice.
Shubha sits behind the piano for a quirky rendition of a Lady Gaga song which wasnâ™t meant to be redundant. She has a respectable voice, but that was awful. Judges were sort of split, but mostly out of politeness.
Kamaria looks like a mini-Mandisa and sings a Kelly Clarkson song, but wants to step into her own spotlight. Her voice isnâ™t very strong at all. Sheâ™s done. The judges had no politeness, except for Mariah who wants everyone to love her.
Kree lives in Nashville, so I like her already. That and sheâ™s really good. Nice tone, consistency, and emotion. Judges are sold. Sheâ™s staying..
Angela has a big smile. Sheâ™s already a favorite because of her last performance. I feel old, because I havenâ™t known many of these songs. Sheâ™s safe, though. They wonâ™t let her go for a while. Judges like her.
Isabelle sings a Billie Holiday, which I do recognize and which makes me feel even older still. Great vocal. Sheâ™s contending with Teena. Judges are fans – Mariah keeps mentioning private conversations she has with Randy.
Amber is last and she sings another song that makes me feel old. Wow, those shoes are definitely blue. She had a great voice as well and a good performance, which I suspect puts her through. Judges stand for her.
My predictions are as follows.
Going Home: Brandy, Shubha, Kamaria, Jenny Beth, Teena
Staying on: Adriana, Kree, Angela, Isabelle, Amber
The judges rise from below the stage to deliver the real results. Jenny Beth is going home. Brandy is done. Teena is staying. (Perhaps bumping Isabelle?) Kree is safe and Mariah needs Brandyâ™s psychiatric help. Isabelle heads home. Angela is through to the next round. Kamaria uses Mariahâ™s excuse about not hearing herself, but she still done for this year. Amber walks up to the judges in time for Mariah to try her hand at the Simon Cowell fake out. Sheâ™s continuing on. Adriana and Shubha are left on the couch. Of course they are besties because it wouldnâ™t be dramatic otherwise. Such an easy decision though. âœThis is a difficult decision,â lies Keith Urban. But Adriana stays.
The guys are up next time, which I think wonâ™t be until Monday for me.
peace… love… bdg…
